What is Postcrossing?

Postcrossing is a worldwide hobby started in 2005 by Paulo Magalhães, a Portuguese entrepreneur. The concept is simple: Postcrossers register on the www.postcrossing.com website and request addresses of other members to send postcards to. In return, other Postcrossers will send a postcard back to you. It’s a reciprocal exchange that allows you to both send and receive postcards from anywhere in the world.

The main goal and guiding mission of Postcrossing is to allow its members to connect with each other through the simple sharing of postcards. It focuses on the joy of giving and receiving surprise mail from strangers. The Postcrossing motto sums it up perfectly: “Send a postcard and receive a postcard back from a random Postcrosser from somewhere in the world.”

As of September 2023, there are over 825,000 registered Postcrossers in 207 different countries. More than 62 million postcards have been sent through Postcrossing so far. This just shows the incredible growth and global reach of the Postcrossing community over the years.

Postcrossers share their love of postcards, stamps, culture, and communication. While letters have become less common in our digital age, receiving a postcard in your mailbox from a stranger thousands of miles away is a uniquely exciting experience!

Postcrossing allows you to learn about new places directly from the people who live there. You get a little glimpse into someone else’s corner of the world – and they get a personalized postcard from you in return. There’s an intimate, tangible quality to Postcrossing that you just can’t replicate online.

Now that you understand the basic concept of Postcrossing, let’s move on to getting registered and set up…
